KANAE MINATO CONFESSIONS PDF

This compulsively readable novel is dark, disturbing, and deceptive. Dark in subject matter: a four-year-old girl, the daughter of teacher Yuko Moriguchi, has been found dead in the swimming pool at the middle school where Moriguchi teaches. Unfortunately, that lack of emotion resonates all too well in any post-mortem examination of school shootings or fired employee revenge plots. Although she does not make her main characters likeable, Minato succeeds in making their lack of remorse both chilling and believable.

Unfortunately, that lack of emotion resonates all too well in any post-mortem examination of school shootings or fired employee revenge plots. Minato tells the story in alternating chapters, each related from the first-person perspective of a character, beginning and ending with the teacher, Moriguchi. Each narrator has a vested interest in relaying events from their perspective; the reader must decide which, if any, are reliable. They translated well into film, and Confessions, directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, made its Canadian debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in Subsequently Minato, who was born in Hiroshima, has written 10 other thrillers and crime dramas, some of which have been made into Japanese television shows.

The writing in Confessions is sharp and fast-paced and the impact of each chapter ratchets up the tension. In a similarly taut fashion, Koch, a Dutch writer and actor, plumbs the depths parents descend to protect a son who has committed a heinous crime.

Despite their ultimate amorality, the characters at the heart of The Dinner are fascinating and the moral dilemma is worth exploring, even as one prefers a world where the protagonists reach a different conclusion about the value of revenge or of pre-emptive strikes as a basis for personal or state actions.
